# Chats

> Read a chat’s participants, name, and message request state.

Read a chat’s participants, name, and message request state.

## The Chat object

| Field | Type | Description |
| - | - | - |
| `id` | string | Unique identifier for the chat |
| `display_name` | string or null | Display name for the chat. When nobody has named it, the other participants' names: "Alice", "Alice & Bob", or "Alice, Bob & Cleo". Can be updated for group chats. |
| `group_chat_icon` (optional) | string or null | URL of the group chat icon. Only set for group chats that have an icon; `null` otherwise. |
| `handles` | array | Contacts that participate in this chat. Each may carry `activity_version` and `activity`, a task label or `null`. See [task activity](https://docs.staging.relayapp.im/chats/activity.md). |
| `is_group` | boolean | Whether this is a group chat |
| `created_at` | string | When the chat was created |
| `updated_at` | string | When the chat was last updated |

Common authentication, validation, and server errors apply alongside resource errors. Read `error.message` for the rejected condition.
