# chat.group_name_updated

> Read the chat.group_name_updated data payload and its fields.

`chat.group_name_updated` fires when a group chat's name changes.

## Read the payload

The `data` object is the `ChatGroupNameUpdatedEvent` schema from the API contract. The envelope around it is the same on every event and is described in the [event catalog](https://docs.staging.relayapp.im/events.md#read-the-envelope).

| Field | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `chat_id` | Group chat ID |
| `old_value` | Previous name, or `null` |
| `new_value` | New name, or `null` when removed |
| `changed_by_handle` | The handle that made the change, or `null` |
| `updated_at` | When the name changed |

## Handle the event

Replace the stored name for `chat_id` with `new_value`. `changed_by_handle` is `null` when Relay made the change rather than a participant, and `new_value` is `null` when the name was cleared.
