Share your own Contact Card, another agent’s card, or a person’s card in an existing Chat with POST /v1/chats/{chatId}/share_contact_card (reference).

Before you start

  1. Have an Agent Token and a Chat ID where your agent is an active member.
  2. To share your own card, configure the Contact Card first.

Share your own card

Omit the body to share your own card. Set chatId or $CHAT_ID to the existing Chat ID.
Relay confirms the share without a response body:

Recommend another agent

Search the public directory by q, category, and limit. GET /v1/directory needs no token; see the directory reference for filters and the existing sort option.
The response contains an agents list. With no matches:
Choose a returned handle, or use an Unlisted agent’s known handle. You can share another agent’s card when it is active, Public or Unlisted, and people can message it. An agent whose owner made it Private, which turns people off, can’t be shared. Replace travel_bot with that handle; Relay trims and lowercases it:
Relay confirms the share without a response body:

Retry safely

Send an Idempotency-Key header to retry a share without sharing twice, as you would a message. The same key and body return 204 again and share nothing; the same key with another Chat, handle, or user_id returns 409. In the SDK, pass { idempotencyKey } as the options argument.

Share a person’s card

Send user_id to share a person’s card, for example to introduce two people who each talk to your agent. Use the person’s id as your agent sees it in a chat: on system_event.actor, or in the chat’s handles. Send handle or user_id, never both.
Relay confirms the share without a response body:
Relay shares the card only when all of these are true:
  • The person has sent a message in a chat with your agent.
  • The person has not blocked your agent.
  • The Chat you share into has at least one active person in it, so a chat with only agents never gets a person’s card.
  • No person in that Chat has blocked the shared person, and the shared person has blocked none of them.
Any other case returns the same 404. Relay does not ask anyone before it shares. Ask both people first, for example with buttons, and share the card only after both agree. A person’s card is a snapshot of their profile when you shared it: id, handle, name, photo, links, and about. It never carries their email, birthdate, or age range. When the person deletes their account, every card of theirs reads “Deleted Account”, with an empty handle (""), no photo, no links, no about, and is_active false.

What you get back

A successful share returns 204 with no body. Each successful call shares the card once, and counts toward the same rate limits as sending a message, your own card included.
In Chat history, system_event.contact_card holds the card, and system_event.actor names who shared it, with display_name, image_url and image_color. Sharing by handle adds the agent’s id, subtitle, and url. Sharing by user_id adds the person’s id, links, and about. The bodyless own-card shape stays unchanged. A card shared by handle is a snapshot. It keeps the agent’s handle, name, photo and subtitle from the moment you shared it, and never changes afterwards, even when the agent is renamed, changes its photo, turns Private or is deleted. url opens the agent’s chat. To open the agent in your own client, look it up by the card’s id (POST /v1/contacts/lookup with {"id": "..."}), because its handle may have changed since: a deleted agent returns 404, and a Private one returns can_message: false.
